Responding to Islamophobia in US and Norway

The Sydney Daily Telegraph and other newspapers and media around the world have given ample coverage to this story. (Click on photo to enlarge!)

US Army said to have taught “total war” on Islam

Lt. Col. Matthew Dooley has been teaching future army officers at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, that a “total war” against the world’s 1.4 billion Muslims will be necessary to protect America from terrorists, according to documents released today in an appalling story in Wired’s Danger Room.

Cartoons included in the course presentation on “Jihad: Defined and Operationalized” contains a number of ugly stereotypes.

Hundreds of US military officers have enrolled in the course on Islamic radicalism since it was first offered four years.

Among the other chilling assertions in the documents:

1. Advocating “total war” against the world’s Muslims

2. “Taking war to a civilian population wherever necessary”

3. Using the lessons of “Hiroshima” to wipe out whole cities at once

4. Applying “the historical precedents of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki” to Islam’s holiest cities, and bringing about “Mecca and Medina[‘s] destruction”

5. “By conservative estimates,” 10 percent of the world’s Muslims, “a staggering 140 million people … hate everything you stand for and will never coexist with you, unless you submit” to Islam

6. International laws protecting civilians in wartime are “no longer relevant”

Also stated, “We have now come to understand that there is no such thing as ‘moderate Islam,” a July 2011 presentation states. “It is therefore time for the United States to make our true intentions clear. This barbaric ideology will no longer be tolerated. Islam must change or we will facilitate its self-destruction.”

Pentagon condemns “war on Islam” training class

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, right, talks to reporters alongside Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta at the Pentagon in April. Commenting on a military training class containing anti-Islam sentiments, Dempsey called the course “totally objectionable.”

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, has now ordered a full investigation into the course. He said the course was “totally objectionable” and “against our values.”

The voluntary course at the Joint Forces Staff College also suggested possible nuclear attacks on holy Muslim cities such as Mecca and Medina.

The course has now been suspended.

“It was just totally objectionable, against our values, and it wasn’t academically sound,” Gen Dempsey said.

The officer in charge of the class, Lt Col Dooley, has been suspended from teaching but has kept his job at the college in the city of Norfolk.

The Pentagon has also confirmed that the course materials posted on the Wired’s Danger Room website is authentic.

Our response to these developments

The course was ended when one of the students protested, reporting what he was being taught to senior officers. But Wired has noted that “the commanders, lieutenant colonels, captains and colonels who sat in Dooley’s classroom, listening to the inflammatory material week after week, have now moved into higher-level assignments throughout the US military.”

These news reports could, of course, make life very difficult for American expats and military and foreign service personnel living in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Please hold us all in the Light, asking God to direct our talents and thoughts to furthering peace and reconciliation. Certainly we are here for such a time as this.

We are asking the Friends Committee on National Legislation in Washington and the American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia to be alert to these circumstances.

As you can imagine Al-Qaeda is already in possession of this story and is having a field day with it. Websites and blogs are buzzing with pictures of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima side by side with photos of the two holy cities Mecca and Medina.

We know that man’s extremity is God’s opportunity. Truly this is an occasion for us to demonstrate God’s love, grace, mercy, and tolerance while we seek to walk humbly with our Lord.

Norwegians sing to defeat Islamophobia

Meanwhile in Europe, Anders Breivik is on trial for mass murder of Norwegian youth and adults, which he says he did because he is at war with Islam. On April 26th, holding roses, more than 40,000 Norwegians turned out to sing to Breivik as he entered the courthouse.

Norwegians gathered in response to comments made by the self-confessed murderer. They were objecting to the claim he made during his trial that the late Pete Seeger’s children’s song “My Rainbow Race” was Marxist brainwashing. Watch and listen as Norwegians respond to hate with flowers, song and love!

  1. My God, Sam. Didn’t realize this was going on. How can the military be funding programs that work with the people of Afghanistan and Iraq and, at the same time, be teaching this stuff to the “brass.” I am sending this on to friends who work with the National Defense University. See what they say. Marina

  2. Marina, it’s no wonder that we have such ungodly behavior by a few our troops in Afghanistan when some of their commanding officers have been taught to hate and annihilate. Let me know what kind of feedback you get from National Defense University. Sam
